Rock the Needle, Soothe a Soul

A few months back, an article was circulating on social media about a veteran soldier who turned to making quilts for other veterans as a way to manage his PTSD*. It got me to thinking about why I quilt, and why so many other women I know quilt, knit, and craft, and I will posit that many of us rock our needles in order to soothe our souls from the PTSD of navigating daily life as women.   Thinking back to our beginnings, we were rocked in utero as our mothers walked. As babies, we were rocked when we were [...]

Tutorial – How to Make Long Cuts

This post is also part of the Colorblock LOVE tutorial series, and the Colorblock Love QAL! There comes a time in your quilt-making adventure where a pattern will call upon you to make a cut that's longer than your mat or ruler. Usually, a 24'' mat is all you'll ever need, until you need to make a 30'' cut. But rest assured, you can make a cut that's longer than your mat. Read on for some tips... Prep the fabric I'm in the camp of not washing my fabric before I use it (unless I'm making a garment, in which [...]

Spring Clean Your Studio – 2019

We're back again with the 2019 edition of the Spring Clean Your Studio Blog Hop! My friend Cheryl Sleboda of muppin.com and sewmuchcosplay.com puts this together every year so that our readers get a peek behind the scenes of different studios. If you've followed me on this in the previous years (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) you know that I'm not a terribly messy person. I find a tidy studio really inspiring and welcoming. I also frequently have friends over to sew at the weekend, or run classes in this space, so I'm always changing things around to fit the work [...]

Studio Habits: SHOULD you make that project?

“Should you make that project?” is another post in the Studio Habits series. If your project list is anything like mine, it’s crowded with ideas and plans for new and unfinished projects. I often say I could go a couple of years without a new idea and still not run out of things to work on! When faced with such a smorgasbord of choices, how do you choose what to tackle? This is a list of the questions I ask myself whenever I start a new project, and usually my answers give me clarity about my choices: […]

Inside My Studio

Come take a peek inside my studio! A couple of years back, Heather Powers of HKPowerStudio interviewed me about my studio space. Back then, it was a slender room in a friend's bigger studio. I recently moved, and dedicated my new, larger living room to be my studio. When I told Heather about it, she asked me to give her an update about the new space. She split the information into two posts that you can read here and here (and the original interview is here). She asks a lot of great questions... not just how I do things, but [...]

WASWI: Asking for better than you get

Here's part of an email I just sent to a company that buys patterns from me. Yet again, my payment was not made in a timely fashion. I sadly deal with more than one company who doesn't start processing my payments until they are on the cusp of due, which means by the time the check is cut, signed, stuck in an envelope, mailed (usually on a Friday) and finally in my mailbox, it's about 10 days overdue. Imagine using this rationale with your credit card company. Right. I don't understand why a company would choose to build a process [...]
