Filling the well – more process

Last week I experimented with a different way of working... instead of just working one thing to the end of a logical step, I tried giving several important things a spot of focus in the same day. When I work one thing at a time it feels like other things may begin to rot from lack of attention. I start to get unfocused on what I'm doing because I'm worrying that the neglected children on my to-do list are getting up to something naughty - and such lack of focus usually makes for some type of mess (an over-looked commitment, [...]

Process – tools!

If you recall, one of the things I pointed out in my original post about process was my desire for efficiency. I like to feel that I waste as little time/fabric/money/regret as possible so as to allow room for more. "More what?" you may ask. More of everything... more time, more groovy things made or designed, more play, more freedom, more future... a little existentialist perhaps, but there you have it! MORE. In concrete terms, efficiency becomes a big deal in how I choose my tools. So here's what I use, and why I chose them (and I have no [...]

Process – storage ideas, part 2

In the last post, I got halfway through describing some of the storage goodies in my studio... here's some more stuff that lives on the big bookshelf: Machine needles and spare blades live in their own little sectioned box, something I found at the hardware store. Always check the hardware store for storage options for small things - chances are you'll get more choices for a cheaper price. I keep a good stash of spares on hand so I don't need to run to the store mid project (or after hours). On the center of the shelf in the above [...]

Process – storage ideas – part 1

And so, back to the studio and the conversation of process. In this post, I'm going to show you some of my storage set-ups, and tell you a little about why I use what I use. I'm going to go counter-clockwise from the cutting table... In the last post I talked about using office tools to hold my rulers, and here's a close up of one of them. It's about 3 inches deep with 3 sections, and works pretty well for almost all of my rulers. I organize them loosely from widest and weirdest (big squares and various triangles) at the [...]

Process – how’s your space?

I've been musing a lot about PROCESS of late. How I work, how I navigate my space, how I navigate my time. While I was in graduate school (MFA in Fiber) I was "encouraged" to work in processes that were unfamiliar or uncomfortable... in essence my favorite toys and tricks were forbidden so that I would get out of my comfort zone. It was at times painful and frustrating, but the game afoot was to make me try this other stuff out so that I could either adapt some of it into my process, or return to my process without [...]

How To Spray Baste A Quilt On a Table

In this blog post, I’ll cover some important points to add to my two popular videos on how to spray baste a quilt on a table and how to spray baste a quilt that's larger than your table.Quilters use spray basting as a popular and efficient technique to secure their quilt layers before the actual quilting process begins.Spray basting offers several advantages over traditional methods like pinning, including reduced distortion and improved flatness. Also, because there are no pins in your quilt top, you don’t have to navigate around them for your quilting design.Use spray basting when you plan [...]

Technical Editing

TECHNICAL EDITING Technical editing is the process of getting a second set of eyes on the patterns you write to make sure they’re the most technically accurate they can be. It gives you confidence that you’re delivering the best possible experience to your customers, and I'm here to support you in that!  Accurate patterns lead to happy customers! And happy customers mean less time spent wrangling customer service! I’ve written well over a hundred patterns (including those in my book and the several magazines) and in my former life I ran quality assurance departments in the high-tech industry. I [...]

Spring Clean Your Studio Blog Hop – 2020 edition!

We're back again with this year's edition of the Spring Clean Your Studio Blog Hop, put together by my friend Cheryl Sleboda of muppin.com and sewmuchcosplay.com. Cheryl chose me to lead off the group this year, on April Fools Day, because I'm usually the person who seldom has a messy studio! This is my sixth year joining in the Spring Clean and usually I show off something that I needed to sort out, along with lots of organizational tips. If you plan to use some of your safe shelter time doing a little spring cleaning, check out the prior years [...]
